WASHINGTON — Rock the Vote President and Executive Director Carolyn DeWitt released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 1, to expand Americans’ access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and strengthen ethics rules for public servants, and for other purposes act.

“Our Democracy is in crisis. The power of big money, the lack of investment in our election infrastructure, and the inaction to protect the freedom to vote, let alone to encourage it indicates a government that has at best forgotten and at worst purged its founding democratic principles. Many of those in power have abandoned the notion that they work for the American people.

America’s democracy is at risk of quickly becoming a different form of government if it hasn’t already and the ability of the American people to reverse this course has been significantly and systematically reduced. We need those in power to restore ours.

By passing HR 1, the House of Representatives took a huge step forward to build a more inclusive, equitable and representative democracy that works for all Americans. The ball is now in the Senate’s court and we ask that each Senator take a hard look at the profound impact the passage of this legislation would have on restoring and protecting our democracy.

Let’s be clear, this vote will determine which Senators support democracy and which do not. It is that simple.”
